3 Ways We Give Back | Practice Social Responsibility

Sustainability

social-responsibility

A few years ago, none of our customers asked us about how we sourced our wood, or whether we practice sustainability.

Today, it’s a common question that we get asked.

The social consciousness of the country is on the rise, and customers want to know that they’re supporting a company that isn’t carelessly consuming without giving back.

They wonder about our “carbon footprint,” and wonder if buying hardwood furniture is the right thing to do.

It is - here’s why!

The Beauty of Hardwood Forests

Unlike many other building materials, trees are “carbon negative” and they reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. So cutting down any tree is bad right? Nope!

When you cut down trees from a hardwood forests, they self regenerate. Unlike softwood forests, they don’t need any help to grow back after they’re harvested.

Removing mature trees just lets the seedlings in the ground get access to the sunlight and nutrients they need to grow.

Hardwood forests don’t need our help - mother nature has them taken care of.

Philanthropy

While giving back has always been a personally important part of my life - I never thought about it from a business standpoint.

Part of the reason is, because like many who practice philanthropy, I do it for me. I don’t usually tell others about it.

I wouldn't even be blogging about it now, but I was recently talked into it. How did my mind change?

I was told that our customers care about supporting socially responsible companies. They want to purchase from businesses who care about more than just their profit.

But how can they know that if we don't tell them?

Our Commitment

In 2018, our customers will help us practice social responsibility, sustainability, & philanthropy through:

1) Donating to The Arbor Day Foundation

I think it’s important to think local AND global. That’s why we decided to make an annual donation to The Arbor Day Foundation.

I actually remember planting trees in celebration of Arbor Day when I was a kid. The Arbor Day Foundation partnered with my school and gave us trees to plant in my community.

They also operate on a global scale, planting trees in Madagascar & preserving trees in other rainforests.

2) Donating to Cook Forest

Cook forest is a local PA forest with a ton of recreation. Not only have we enjoyed Cook Forest, but our kids and grandkids have as well.

We chose Cook Forest for this very reason, because we hope families can enjoy it the way we have for many years to come. We’re doing that through an annual donation to the nonprofit charity Pennsylvania Parks & Forest Foundation.

3) Donating a Table Set to The Salvation Army

You see them every year ringing the bell at Christmas time, but do you know what the nonprofit actually does?

A LOT including:

  • Helping disaster survivors
  • Feeding the hungry
  • Fighting human trafficking
  • Stopping domestic violence
  • Serving veterans... & the list goes on!

We’ve donated to the Salvation Army in the past, but this year is the first time it clicked - we should donate a dining set.

Having somewhere to sit down with family and friends over a nice meal is something many of us take for granted.

The Salvation Army will either use the table we donate, or sell it in their family store.

“And the proceeds are used to fund our Adult Rehabilitation Centers,

where those in the grip of addiction find help, hope, and a second chance at life.”

- The Salvation Army Website

Either way, out table will bring people together - what more could you ask for?!

While I was researching, I found out you can even schedule to have donations picked up. Talk about making it easy!

Thanks for Helping us Help Others!

Rest assured, an IP Furniture Design purchase doesn't harm the environment, and doesn't just benefit the Miller family. It also helps us help others who are doing great things locally, nationally, & globally.

A big thanks goes out to all of our customers in 2018. We wouldn't be able to do this without you!

Do you have furniture you’re replacing? Join us in donating to the Salvation Army, OR one of these great charities who will also come and pick up your donation.
